WordPress Origin Story

I started building sites in WordPress in 2010, when I was hired at a digital marketing company that used WordPress. I was barely familiar with it and had no idea what I was getting myself into. A year or two into the job, I was pulled aside by my boss and told that a client was about to sue us over a site that someone else had been working on for 9 months. He asked if I could build a new site from scratch within a week. I took a few hours to talk to the client and be sure I understood what he wanted, and then I built him the first truly customizable, user-friendly WordPress site our company had produced.

Not only did I get it done in a week, he loved it so much that he kept the site for a full decade before replacing it. I also ended up completely changing how we built sites, making them significantly more flexible and creating a custom page builder before page builder plugins became ubiquitous. (My coworkers, clients and I still prefer my custom ACF-based builder.)

That’s when I realized I loved building flexible, user-friendly (or noob-proofed) sites using WordPress. I assumed that some day soon, WordPress would fall out of fashion and I’d have to use something new. But instead it’s just gotten bigger.
