Bio

Hi there!
I’m Toine, a 26-year-old student from Utrecht, The Netherlands, currently in the final phase of my Communication and Multimedia Design studies. My focus is on UI/UX (web) design and concept creation, where I aim to create user-friendly, accessible, and innovative digital solutions. Feel free to check out my portfolio to see my work!

In my designs, web accessibility plays a key role (like proper color contrast, font clamping for responsive typography, and the use of ARIA labels), to ensure inclusive and functional experiences for all users.

In addition to my studies, I work at Uw Computerstudent, a company that provides IT assistance through students across the Netherlands, with a special focus on supporting seniors. I also design and develop websites for a wide range of clients, including entrepreneurs, small businesses, and organizations. This allows me to apply my design principles to real-world projects and help clients establish their online presence.

I’m also an active member of the WordPress community. I provide feedback, report bugs, and contribute to making plugins translatable and localizable, both on WordPress.org and GitHub. I use tools like DeepL with WP.org glossary integration through the ‘WordPress Translation Filler Extended’ browser extension. (Special thanks to Peter Smits, a well-known Dutch GTE/PTE, for creating this!)

Additionally, I work extensively with Elementor, a tool I enjoy using for creating dynamic and flexible website designs. I actively provide feedback to the Elementor team to help improve the builder for users worldwide.

Most of my WordPress contributions involve translating plugins, themes, and other content into Dutch. To date, I’ve translated over 50 plugins, totaling more than 15,000 strings. It’s a rewarding way to merge my passion for design, accessibility, and community involvement.

WordPress Origin Story

In 2014, I started working with Joomla as my first CMS. While it served as a decent introduction to website building, I quickly realized that Joomla was neither intuitive nor flexible enough for my growing needs. Updates were slow, new features lacked innovation, and the plugin ecosystem left much to be desired. By 2016, I decided to make the switch to WordPress—a platform I had initially avoided due to its perceived steep learning curve. To my surprise, I found WordPress much easier to learn and far more powerful than I had anticipated.
At first, I worked with popular Envato/ThemeForest themes like The7, Avada, and BeTheme, often paired with WPBakery (formerly Visual Composer). While these tools were widely used, I soon realized their drawbacks: they were poorly optimized, difficult to scale, and not future-proof. This pushed me to search for better solutions, and in 2018, I discovered Elementor—a page builder that truly revolutionized the WordPress experience.
Elementor stood out for its drag-and-drop simplicity, live editing, and robust customization options. For its time, it was by far the best page builder in the WordPress ecosystem. Over the years, Elementor has continued to evolve, adding advanced features like flexbox containers, nested elements, and loop grids, making it a highly competitive tool. While there are now strong alternatives like Bricks and Breakdance, I still find Elementor to offer the best balance of usability, power, and flexibility for most projects.
That said, I occasionally work on Divi sites as well, but with Divi 5 delayed and still lacking critical features like flexbox support, I’ve been steering clients toward Elementor as a more future-proof solution. While no tool is perfect (and, let’s be honest, Gutenberg is anything but intuitive), Elementor remains my go-to for building fast, visually appealing, and functional websites. Its ability to bridge the gap between design and development has made it indispensable in my workflow.
As of now, I’m heavily focused on creating dynamic Elementor websites using Advanced Custom Fields (ACF). This approach allows me to build scalable, high-performance, and fully customized web solutions tailored to my clients’ unique needs.
