    Thomas studied mechanical engineering at TU Dresden, graduating as a Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.)—and quickly proving his geek credentials by becoming an enthusiastic fan of Fortran 90 back when the standard was still shiny and brand new.

    When not crunching complex calculations, he has been tinkering with open-source software, digital typography, and web utilities since the late 1990s. His side projects include maintaining LaTeX font and symbol packages on CTAN, building online transliteration tools, and designing vector glyphs for open font families.

    Interests

    Spending three hours designing an automated regex script to fix a single misplaced em-dash—because taking two seconds to fix it manually would be an utter defeat of engineering principles.

    WordPress Origin Story

    In 1994, Thomas was still debating character encodings on Usenet, channeling Sherlock Holmes’s habit of dropping spurious German classicist quotations into A Study in Scarlet: “Der Code ist kraus, doch rein sei der Satz.” Goethe is always pithy.

    By 2007, early web publishing was plagued by mangled text and broken quotes. Realizing the web needed someone to champion the details, he jumped into WordPress to patch localization bugs and refine text handling—ensuring the platform treated typography with proper respect.
