Profiles

I’ve retired as a journalist, having worked more than three decades as a reporter, columnist and editor for U.S. and British newspapers, and as a researcher for two American think tanks.

I write about U.S. foreign policy options, liberalism and Islamism, and the evolution of Muslims societies. I have an incurable itch for traveling in Europe, the Middle East and my native Indian subcontinent. My favorite haunts are London, Florence, Istanbul, Kolkata, the German countryside, the Indian state of Assam and the Swat Valley in Pakistan.

I live, alternately, in the Washington suburbs and Sylhet, Bangladesh.
