Why I made Strata

Most jobs I take start with a site I didn’t build. It’s been around for years. A few different people have worked on it and none of them left notes.

Before I touch anything I need to know what’s there. I used to do that by clicking through every page and writing things down. It took hours and I’d still get caught out. I’d remove something that looked dead and find out a week later it wasn’t.

I tried the audit tools that were around. They check a site from the outside, like Google does. That tells you a page is slow. It doesn’t tell you which snippet is doing nothing, or which template is still in use, or where the broken link actually sits so you can go fix it.

So I made my own. Strata goes through the site from the inside and shows you what’s in it and what depends on what. When it finds a problem it says where it is and what to do. If it changes something, you can undo it. It asks first.

I use it on my own client sites. I figured other people stuck with the same mess would want it too.
