Bio

I’m a Certified Executive MCode Coach and online educator with 30+ years of experience as a freelancer, designer, and founder. In 2008, I created the WordPress 101 video tutorial series — which went on to become one of the most popular WordPress tutorial resources in the world, helping over 3 million people learn to build websites.

After 14 years and more than 1,500 tutorial videos, I sold WP101 to my friend, Syed Balkhi of Awesome Motive in 2023 and joined the team at MotivationCode.com.

Today, I’m VP of Learning Strategy at MotivationCode.com, training and certifying coaches to use the MCode assessment with their clients. I also work one-on-one with entrepreneurs who are burned out and disconnected from the work they built — helping them understand how they’re naturally wired and realign what they do with what actually drives them.

Interests

I’m an avid fan of F1 and IndyCar racing, and raced sports cars at an amateur level for many years. I enjoy running, being a GeekDad³, and traveling with my wife and our three teenage dynamos. When I’m not in front of the computer, you’ll often find me on the back porch, enjoying a cigar with a nice whiskey.

WordPress Origin Story

I started designing websites in 1994, using WYSIWYG apps like Adobe PageMill. As my skills and the complexity of my clients’ sites grew, I began using more powerful apps like Adobe GoLive and Dreamweaver.

By the mid-2000s, my clients began requesting the ability to edit their own website content. So I experimented with the most popular CMS systems at the time. They all seemed to be bloated, unnecessarily complicated, and unintuitive. Imagine my relief when I discovered WordPress 2.0 in June of 2006.

Compared to Joomla, Drupal, and Expression Engine, I felt WordPress was incredibly intuitive. Thankfully, so did my clients. They particularly enjoyed the ability to create and edit their own website content using just a web browser—without learning how to code or hire a ‘webmaster’ every time they needed to make changes. I began recommending WordPress for every new website and have never looked back!

In 2008, I created WP101.com, which has become one of the most popular WordPress tutorial sites in the world. Since then, the WordPress 101 tutorial videos have helped millions of people all around the world learn how to use WordPress to build their own website or blog.

Over the next 14 years, I created over a thousand tutorial videos for Automattic, WooCommerce, GoDaddy, Namecheap, Yoast, Beaver Builder, Ninja Forms, and many others.

In 2023, I sold WP101 to my friend, Syed Balkhi — founder of WP Beginner and Awesome Motive — to join another good friend, Chris Lema, at MotivationCode.com.

Today, I’m VP of Learning Strategy at MotivationCode.com, where I train and certify coaches to use the MCode assessment with their clients.

I’m also a Certified Executive Coach, working one-on-one with entrepreneurs who are feeling burned out and disconnected from the work they built — helping them understand how they’re naturally wired and realign what they do with what actually drives them.

On a personal note, I’m an avid fan of F1 and IndyCar racing, and raced sports cars myself for many years in our local SCCA. When I’m not in front of the computer, you’ll often find me enjoying a nice cigar and whiskey with my amazing wife, Kay. And my greatest joy in life is helping our three kids discover their own gifts and purpose.

If you’re feeling burned out or disconnected from your work — I’d love to help. Let’s talk.

Job History

Founder, Online Educator
Sep 2008 – Jan 2023
WP101.com
My journey in online education began in 2008 when I created the original WordPress 101 video tutorial series. Over the next 14 years, WP101 helped over 3 million people learn how to use WordPress. I licensed the WordPress 101 videos to dozens of notable companies including GoDaddy, WP Engine, Liquid Web, and many others. And I pioneered a process for not only creating compelling and clear instructional content, but also keeping it up-to-date with every major release for more than 14 years. Successfully exited, after selling the company to Awesome Motive in 2023.
Founder, Freelance Designer
Oct 1988 – Sep 2014
LeftLane Designs
For 28 years, I specialized in building distinctive branding systems as a freelance designer. This experience not only honed my creative skills but also gave me invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities of freelance life. Developed logos, branding systems, and marketing materials for a diverse range of clients across various industries. Along the way, I learned to thrive — not just survive — the feast-or-famine nature of freelancing, as well as all the other challenges that came with it.
