Bio

Rúben Martins is a senior full-stack web developer focused on building scalable, business-critical solutions on top of WordPress. He started working with WordPress in 2014 on a real estate platform that required custom API integrations, quickly moving beyond standard implementations into fully tailored systems.

Since then, he has consistently pushed WordPress beyond its typical use case—developing complex platforms such as booking engines, car hire systems, resort management solutions, contract workflows, and ticketing platforms with real-time capacity constraints. His work treats WordPress as a foundation for SaaS-like applications rather than a traditional CMS.

With a strong background across frontend, backend, and infrastructure, Rúben works end-to-end—from database design and performance tuning to UI implementation. He has deep experience with PHP, JavaScript, MySQL/MariaDB, and hosting environments using Apache and CloudLinux, with a particular focus on scaling WordPress to handle high concurrency and large datasets.

His approach is highly business-driven: instead of off-the-shelf solutions, he works closely with stakeholders across multiple departments to understand operations in depth, translating real-world processes into efficient, maintainable systems.

Rúben has been part of the WordPress community since attending his first WordCamp in Lisbon in 2015, where he found a network of like-minded developers focused on pushing the platform forward.

WordPress Origin Story

I started using WordPress in 2014 during a freelance project for a real estate agency that needed to refresh their website. The goal was straightforward at first—improve content management—but quickly evolved into integrating a third-party API to pull property listings dynamically. WordPress wasn’t just a CMS in that context; it became the foundation for a more connected, data-driven solution.

Shortly after, I pushed it further with a sports events platform that handled registrations, ticketing, and limited-capacity competitions. That project required custom development well beyond typical usage at the time, and it’s still running today. That was the moment WordPress shifted from “tool” to “platform” for me.
