I didn’t choose WordPress. WordPress chose me, the way a stray cat chooses the one person at the party who’s allergic. I needed a photography portfolio site back in 2010 because apparently being good at taking pictures wasn’t enough. You also had to prove it on the internet, which at the time felt like being told your résumé needed a dance number.

So I Googled “how to build a website” like a man Googling “how to remove a raccoon from your attic” at 2 AM. Both situations share the same energy: you’re in over your head, something is scratching behind the walls, and every forum answer contradicts the last one. I tried Squarespace first. It was beautiful and I hated it. It felt like renting a really nice apartment where the landlord wouldn’t let you move the furniture. I tried Wix once, for about eleven minutes, and I don’t talk about it for the same reason people don’t talk about their worst haircut.

WordPress was the first platform that let me break things on purpose and then fix them at 3 AM while questioning every decision I’d made since high school. That’s when I knew it was home. I’ve since built and managed WordPress sites across commercial photography, tourism directories, and marketing consulting. At one point I was managing four WordPress installs simultaneously, which I’m pretty sure qualifies as either a small business or a cry for help. Possibly both.
