I started my career as a Drupal Developer. It was great but I always felt that Drupal went the hardest way around many problems. With the arrival of Drupal 8 with Symfony and OOP the company decided to branch out into new fields so we could provide service to a wider audience. We chose WordPress because of its great UI out of the box and the community of Plugin developers provided.

Drupal was always a very open source and you were generally shunned or frowned upon for even hinting at the idea of asking people to pay for a Module (Plugin) but from the outside looking in now I can see that the paid plugin model allows not only a revenue stream for the WordPress community but also gives these community members the ability to keep security patches and features constainly incoming as well as giving them the ability to feed their family.
