WordPress Origin Story

In 2004, I was already working for the British government doing some open source stuff, while also volunteering full time at the Free Software Foundation. I read Mark Pilgrim’s blog posts about Movable Type and Bytemark Hosting and decided to spin up a Bytemark server and install WordPress myself.

A few years later, I lucked my way into working full time on free software stuff, and I made a short film with Stephen Fry to promote the upcoming 25th anniversary of the GNU Project. Matt agreed to help mirror it.

Twenty years later I’m still doing free software/open source stuff. Still using WordPress.
