In 1996 I built Azusa Pacific University’s first website. This was pre-CMS — everything hand-coded, every update a manual operation. I watched that problem get solved badly for years before WordPress got it right. I started contributing because the community was solving a real problem thoughtfully, and that’s a rare thing. I built one of the first child theme frameworks when the ecosystem needed a cleaner way to extend themes without forking them. I helped connect MeasureMap to WordPress before Google bought it. I’ve spoken at WordCamps and contributed to translation and internationalization work. The through-line is the same thing that brought me to the web in the first place: I wanted people to be able to publish their own work, on their own terms, without needing an intermediary.
