Bio

Jerry Benton is a Linux systems developer with over 30 years of experience in software engineering, cybersecurity, and infrastructure automation. He is the founder of Mailborder Systems, a company focused on secure email gateway technologies and open-source development.

Jerry is best known for authoring MailScanner v5, a major modernization of the popular open-source email security suite, and for building the Mailborder platform — a commercial-grade, C-based PHP runtime for secure, high-performance mail system management.

His work emphasizes clean code, performance, and practical security. When not developing backend systems, Jerry spends time improving open-source tools that simplify administration and strengthen security for Linux-based environments.

Interests

When I’m not buried in code or tuning servers, I spend time working on open-source projects, testing new security tools, and experimenting with automation and self-hosting setups.

Outside of tech, I enjoy automotive work — particularly performance builds and diagnostics — along with metal fabrication, tinkering in the garage, and keeping up with the latest in cybersecurity research and Linux kernel development.

WordPress Origin Story

I started using WordPress in 2013 to rebuild the Mailborder website. At the time, I was looking for a flexible, self-hosted platform that didn’t get in the way of real development work — something with a solid ecosystem, strong community support, and extensibility through plugins and APIs.

WordPress checked all those boxes. Its mature plugin system and broad developer community made it the logical choice for powering e-commerce, support, and documentation for Mailborder. Over the years, I’ve built custom integrations and security features around it, including plugins designed to connect enterprise systems like software licensing platforms and Zendesk through secure authentication methods such as JWT-based SSO.
