    Screenshots 5 to 12 move to .gif. Photon caches the thumbnail source per file path and ignores the rev query wp.org appends, so the reordered images kept serving their previous thumbnails. A new path is the only lever and .png and .jpg are both still cached from earlier sets. These are flat UI captures, so GIF costs nothing: most files came out smaller.
