    Web developer since 1999. I run Macronimous, a web development agency in Coimbatore, India, working white-label for agencies and businesses in the US, UK, and Australia since 2002.
    More than 1,500 WordPress sites so far — five-page brochure sites at one end, a university network of around 600 subsites and several thousand pages at the other. Planning through to long-term maintenance, mostly under someone else’s name.

    WordPress Origin Story

    We wrote our own PHP CMS in 2003 and shipped client work on it for years. Two things ended it.
    The first was that every new feature request meant building it ourselves. The same request in WordPress was usually a plugin that already existed and that somebody else was already maintaining. We were spending our time keeping a CMS alive instead of building websites.
    The second is less flattering: clients started asking for WordPress by name. You can argue with that for a while. Then you stop.
    We put it on our own blog first, in 2008, on the theory that if it broke we’d only be annoying ourselves. It didn’t break. Client sites followed almost immediately, and the custom CMS was retired.
