WordPress Origin Story

I was an ex-Movable Type user who waited far too long to abandon the platform, once they became all about the money. At that point, I wasn’t developing in PHP, I was using (wait for it) COBOL, as I’d first learned it in college many years before. I was starting to get a bit bored with just checking and fixing COBOL code that was almost as old as me, so I got into learning PHP alongside the day job.

Even then, I wasn’t looking to develop for WordPress, PHP was really just a hobby. It took another 10 years before I started to take it more seriously than just writing snippets or the odd simple plugin for existing sites I was involved with. I eventually fell into the earlyish days of consumer-focused webapp development and, for reasons I can’t really tell you, fell in love with Laravel.

Throughout all this I was running, managing and maintaining WordPress websites for both myself and an increasing client list. Even today, sometimes I just design and build sites for fun, without expecting any kind of wide interest or financial return. I have an unhealthily extensive domain portfolio as a result.
