Bio

I’m a seasoned front-end developer, though more of a designer and a builder than a programmer. I’ve built everything from simple one-page sites to complex SaaS applications (yes really).

My wife and I co-founded a nonprofit called The Universal Design Project in 2016 and I stopped developing client sites, though I now run a WordPress maintenance business. It’s called MountainWP.

Little-known fact: I do all my typing with one finger and use a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury. I broke my neck in a downhill skiing accident in 1999.

WordPress Origin Story

I’ve been building websites since before Y2K. I started with Microsoft Frontpage and Macromedia Dreamweaver in college. After figuring out that there was more that could be done with websites than linking static pages together, I started looking at different software. Back then WordPress was good for blogs and not much else, so I got to know pMachine well and started developing on that. pMachine was eventually replaced by ExpressionEngine (and a higher price tag), which I used for a few years. As I started doing more and more development, particularly to learn new skills with sites that didn’t make me any money, the licensing costs for ExpressionEngine drove me back to exploring what the “free” WordPress option could do. WordPress eventually won me over and I’ve been happily using it since 2007.
