Bio

Martin Carroll has been a writer and advocate for improving health in low- and middle-income countries since 2003 when he joined the British Medical Association’s International Department. With project funding from the UK’s Department for International Development, he was both co-editor and contributor to ‘Improving health for the world’s poor: what can health professionals do?’, an advocacy toolkit for the global health sector which was published in 2007. Since then, he has contributed blogs, articles and opinion pieces to online platforms such as the BMJ and End Water Poverty, before becoming a freelance writer in 2017.

Since 2008, Martin has been actively involved with Healthcare Information for All (HIFA). HIFA is a dynamic global movement, working towards a shared vision: a world where every person will have access to the healthcare information they need to protect their own health and the health of others. Martin was an early champion of HIFA and, as a member of the Steering Group, he played a key role in building the profile, membership and influence of the movement. He is now an independent adviser to HIFA and was recently appointed Chief Blogger, providing a monthly round-up of the hot topics discussed on the HIFA discussion forum.

Martin holds a B.A (Hons) in History from the University of Leicester and is based in London. Along with writing, he is also willing to consider proof-reading and copy editing assignments. Contact him to discuss your requirements by sending an e-mail to martinmichaelcarroll(AT)icloud(DOT)com

WordPress Origin Story

I’m not sure how interesting my story is but WordPress and I go back to the days of ‘Code is Poetry’. I set up my first WP site in 2010 using the Atahualpa theme. That was for The Sleepless, a band comprising myself on guitar and my lifelong friend Ronan on drums. We write our own stuff and we call it ‘music from the dusty corners of life’ – it’s lo-fi, richly melodic, and … well, you just need to hear it by visiting the-sleepless.com – having moved on from Atahualpa, our current site has been developed using Avada. You can hear more on our Soundcloud page, https://soundcloud.com/the_sleepless

I’m also a freelance writer and advocate for health in low- and middle-income countries. My specialist interest is access to healthcare information – although we live in the information age and have the world on our iPhones, tens of thousands of women, children and men die every day for lack of simple life-saving interventions, which were often available locally. People are literally dying for lack of knowledge. I’m an adviser to Healthcare Information for All (hifa.org) which is working to put an end to this entirely preventable crisis. If you are interested, why not join HIFA – it’s free and you’ll be part of a dynamic movement for change. Best wishes and God bless WP! Martin
