Bio

I’ve been helping communicators, writers, artists, photographers and publishers for over 20 years produce their content by knowing the technical side of that process.

I’ve always been on the digital side of things. In the past, that was as a Macintosh and networking expert, color scientist and print expert. Later, it meant working with printers across the world to reliably print books and get shipped to their destinations.

Today, that means WordPress. Since my focus has always been technology, not content, I spend my days minding the back-end of WordPress websites, making sure that they are secure, fast and reliable. I research adding plugin/theme functionality to WordPress and handle the integration and testing to make sure the process goes smoothly. Finally, I apply best practices to backups, updates, security settings, security software and user security to make sure that your WordPress site keeps running the way you want it to and doesn’t get hacked.

If at some point you got lost in that above paragraph and you have a WordPress site that your company relies on for it’s livelihood, then maybe give me a call or send me an email. We can chat and see if there’s anything I can help you with on your WordPress site.

I’m based near Seattle, but I’m available to help you wherever you are.

WordPress Origin Story

I originally got shoved into WordPress sometime in 2009 when my business partner decided to hire a marketing person, who decided to move our existing website (such as it was) to WordPress. Then it broke (who knows how, I wasn’t involved yet…) Once it broke it then became my problem…

I literally had no idea what WordPress was and had never heard of it… I was an HTML kind of guy. If I could read the code, I could make it work. Suddenly there was all of this PHP code and it looked like something was happening in the background that It was very frustrating. But I learned, I cussed a little and learned some more. Eventually the site was up and running.

Fast forward a few years and a friend of mine asks if I can help her out. A non-profit she was working with had some porn links at the bottom of their website! Yikes, this was not good. So I agreed to help, again, having no idea what I was getting into. I got the site backed up and tried to clean the offending code, only to realize that they had infected the PHP at a level below where a simple clean up would fix it. Eventually I had to rebuild the site manually and I remembered a little plugin that I had used before called Wordfence. I installed the free version to keep the bad guys out and with some careful management of the settings over the next 12 months, I was able to go from 2000 unique attacks per day to less than a dozen per week. I still watch over the site to this day and it’s one of my earliest success stories as I shifted my professional focus completely to WordPress security and server management. And to be honest, I could not have done it without Wordfence, the folks there are pure gems to work with and it is my number one go to plugin.
