WordPress Origin Story

It’s not really something special… at the time I started writing my blog regularly, I used an old CMS from a company I worked with (its first version was free and open source; the current, updated versions are all closed source and require a license). However, as the Web evolved, it became harder and harder to maintain the old code. Some fellow bloggers who wrote about Second Life already used WordPress a lot, and the hosting company I used (DreamHost — I still am their customer for some domain names, but not for the shared service) simplified the whole installation (and maintenance!), so I tried it out. I became immediately a fan and started to convert all my non-profit sites to WordPress 🙂 That was almost two decades ago; nowadays, you will really need to drag me by my feet and shackle me to the desk to force me to use any other CMS…

(Update: I _do_ like flat-file/database-less CMS, though. I’ve tested Grav and it’s _insanely fast_. And these days I’m having fun with Go and its out-of-the-box, super-powerful template engine. Still, WordPress is king. There is no denying that.)

Update for late 2024: Currently, I’m unfortunately unable to stick to my previous pledge of working one hour per week on WP community projects. Sorry, guys! Life has these turns and twists, and for the foreseeable time, I will have little time left. But… what twists and turns comes back… so who knows what the future will bring? I might even update my ancient plugins! 😀
