WordPress Origin Story

“We’d like to gently replace the Excel sheets our B2B clients are using to pass their orders by a webshop. We have approximately 3.000 products in our SAP environment. Could you look into that? We haven’t got any budget.” It’s the summer of 2015 when a message unlike any other pops up in my mailbox as an Oxfam volunteer.

Since about a year I had been experimenting with ‘this CMS thingy’ to quickly get some hobby sites up in the air. “I’ll give it a try, and investigate if it is possible to automatise the entire flow.” Half a year later we abolished Excel altogether, coupled the webshop to another ERP and started using WooCommerce as the backbone for our showroom too. It got me a job.

The CMS, of course, was called WordPress. As we speak I continue to be amazed by the unique combination of ease of use and customisability the platform offers. Not to forget the broad community. The internet might not have become the free-haven its pioneers dreamed of, but the WordPress community sure sheds some hopeful rays of light.
