WordPress Origin Story

I first came across WordPress in around 2005 or 2006. I was reading a friends blog and they were talking about how easy it is to be a blogger and wrote a day-in-the-life type article about how she uses WordPress to blog.

I looked up WordPress from that prompt and became fascinated at how much WordPress does in the background. I had previously built some websites out of my own curiosity but they were all very simple things because I got bored with all the background work. WordPress took care of the database, had all the password functionality built-in, it took care of file storage, all the tedious stuff was ‘just there’.

I began to fiddle with a few things here and there, built my own child themes, helped out friends with sites that they managed for churches, clubs, and other places. I built plugins to take surveys and I built themes to collect ticket purchases, and I built full-stack VM’s for myself and others.

I took my hobby and turned it into my business and created Everyday Publishing in 2013. I did what I always did, I just started charging for it this time around. That business survived until 2018. There were a few unexpected twists and turns that used up all my capital but I’m looking forward to building another business from WordPress soon.

My only regret is that I didn’t value my code. Of all the things that I’ve created I never bothered to keep. In hindsight I could have just used a simple GitHub repo and forgotten about it. On the bright side, everything I’ve ever done is still in my head, so now it’s time to get it out of my head and into the open world for others to build upon, just as I’ve built upon the work of others myself.
