    WordPress Origin Story

    I’ve been building websites since the heyday of Geocities. When I was in high school, I took what I knew about HTML and Dreamweaver to make websites for family and friends, and I’ve dabbled in it ever since for personal projects. My partner and I started using WordPress.org around 15 years ago for our own personal sites, and we both eventually started learning more about plugins, PHP, and JavaScript as the need arose.

    Fast forward to January 2020, when I began pursuing a degree in journalism. I’ve always enjoyed writing — which is what drove me to English education — and journalism seemed like a natural fit. As the editor for the school’s newspaper, one of my duties was to help my staff writers create portfolios. The platform of choice? WordPress.
