Been in computers since punch cards. I was a software consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation for 20 years. The thing I love most about computers is they do exactly what you tell them to do. The thing I hate most about computers is they do exactly what you tell them to do.

WordPress Origin Story

I’ve been in computers since punch card days. Did web pages back when one fired up their favorite text editor (EMACS) and coded HTML by hand. I’ve developed web sites for customers and myself. Had a brief encounter with MS IIS (gag). Developed much with Adobe DreamWeaver (Yea). Then 15 years of not doing much with web stuff.

Until a few months ago my wife started selling ColorStreet nail products. I thought she needed a web site. So I purchased her domain name (funandflairwithnails.com), secured a host provider, and tried using SitePad Website Builder. I got two pages in and started pondering if I should fire up DreamWeaver instead. Proglem was, I really didn’t want to work that hard. (Grumble). I knew of WordPress, but I thought is was primarily for blogs, so I didn’t really consider it to fit what I needed.

Then we went on vacation to Pigeon Forge (don’t judge; it was a free condo) with two of our friends. At lunch one day I started lamenting about the problems building my wife’s site and how I really didn’t want to fire up DreamWearer, when Dave handed me his phone.

I said, “Nice site. What am I looking at?”

He said, “I did all that in WordPress.”

Oh. Went home. Read some articles. Watched a video (really good video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AZ8GqW5iak). Then wrote her site.

I’m hooked.
