WordPress Origin Story

My WordPress journey started back in 2012. I didn’t choose WordPress because it was trendy or because some guru told me to. I needed a website that I could control without begging developers every time I wanted to change a heading.

Back then, I was working on real business websites in Sri Lanka, and basically, every client was asking for SEO. But here’s the thing – you can’t do proper SEO if you’re fighting with your CMS. WordPress just made sense. It gave me the freedom to optimize meta tags, fix URLs, add schema markup, and test things without breaking the entire site.

I’m not going to sugarcoat it – WordPress isn’t perfect. The plugin ecosystem is hit or miss. Some themes are bloated garbage that piss me off with their code. But it’s the most practical platform for SEO work, and that’s what matters.

Over the years, I’ve used it to build award-winning sites like matchmaker.lk and advice.lk, alstonantony.com, bringing in tens of thousands of targeted visitors purely through SEO. WordPress became my testing ground – the place where I learn what actually works versus what’s just SEO myths and hype.
