Bio

Hi, I’m Angie Drake — a writer, strategist, and sustainable tourism advocate dedicated to building bridges across the Americas. Through Not Your Average American and NYAA Consulting, I share stories that connect people to place and support projects that honor cultural heritage, biodiversity, and local communities. Whether I’m building websites, writing content, or helping shape tourism strategies, I believe in responsible travel that respects both people and place. I’m especially passionate about empowering small tourism businesses—many in Andean and Amazonian regions—with ethical digital tools and smart communication. Off the clock, I’m a gluten-free, dairy-free foodie always on the lookout for something delicious, and I love unwinding with a good game of Civilization VI.

WordPress Origin Story

I started my WordPress journey back in 2013 with Not Your Average American on WordPress.com. I had flirted with blogging before that, but WordPress was the platform that finally stuck. As my site grew, it became clear I needed more flexibility and control, so I moved to WordPress.org. I tried various hosting solutions, like Bluehost, and even hired developers to help untangle the growing complexity of my site, a large collection of travel writing and photography available in English and Spanish.

At the same time, I was helping clients—many of them small tourism businesses in South America—who were struggling with unreliable hosting, poor design, and advice from folks who didn’t understand the unique challenges of tourism websites. Tourism is a different beast and deserves a unique approach to other sales websites.

That’s when I decided to build a better solution—not just for me, but for my clients too. A couple of years ago, I launched my hosting agency using WPMU DEV, and I’ve been pleased as punch ever since. It’s empowering to offer reliable, user-friendly WordPress solutions to people who truly need them.
