Bio

My real name is Roberto A. Reid. I am a writer, historian and have become a genealogical researcher as a result of my writing. I write mostly about my people, the Panamanian West Indians, who came to the Isthmus of Panama beginning in the 1820’s to work on various mega projects including the Banana plantations of Bocas del Toro, the Panama Railroad and The Panama Canal. In most of these endeavors the West Indians were the most numerous of the labor force and were it not for their strength and persistence, the Panama Canal wouldn’t be the technical miracle it is today. More than 75,000 West Indians including Jamaicans and Barbadians lost their lives in the building of these enormous undertakings.
