WordPress Origin Story

When I first started building websites I discovered that HTML just wasn’t enough – I needed something to happen, some functionality that sprung in to play that made a difference to the end user, to help them engage. I’ve been coding with PHP since 2006 and the way I began was to read the documentation. I’m one of those guys that has to know how the cogs turn, what makes them move and why they move – the documentation was well written so that’s where I started.

I remember one day back in 2009 I came across an article with Matt Mullenweg and it was discussing this amazing software that was written for bloggers. The truly amazing thing was, it came with a 5 minute install!

Around about the same time in 2009 a lady came to me saying she had a problem with her website. It was built using WordPress. Up until this point I had never seen the code base so, I just jumped right in and fixed it – as I recall it was a theme related issue, the white screen of death.

I haven’t looked back to be honest. I’ve played around with Joomla and Drupal and while the code-base was simple enough to understand, the execution always struck me as over-complicated for the end user.
